Vocabulary:
Alleles- receiving one of these from each of your parents, these can be dominant and recessive and make up genotypes.
Genes- the units that determine ones traits Dominant- when referring to traits, the dominant trait is the one that is always expressed when present Recessive- when referring to traits, the recessive trait is a trait that will only be expressed when no dominant trait is present Homozygous- a pair of alleles that are all the same, all dominant or all recessive (AA, aa) Heterozygous- a pair of alleles that are different, dominant and recessive (Aa) Punnett- a grid used for calculating the likliehood of traits through the use of the P1 generations genotype Monohybrid- a type of cross used in a punnett square that compares only one pair of alleles from each parent Dihybrid- a type of cross used in a punnett square that compares two pairs of alleles from each parent Mendel- a scientist that discovered the basis of all genetics, "the father of genetics" Incomplete Dominance- when two dominant alleles are present and the two are combined to achieve a balance of the two traits Codominance- when two dominant alleles are present and both are equally expressed. Sex-linked- a trait that's phenotype is affected by the sex of the organism Genotype- the alleles that make-up an organisms genes Phenotype- the expression of a trait |
